USA WRESTLING TO HOLD MAJOR YOUTH TOURNAMENT IN COLUMBUS

2007 KIDS/CADET CENTRAL KIDS REGIONAL TO ATTRACT HUNDREDS
TO COLUMBUS CONVENTION CENTER FOR MEMORIAL DAY TOURNEY

About 700 youth wrestlers will hit the mats at the Greater Columbus Convention Center this weekend when the Greater Columbus Sports Commission and Ohio USA Wrestling host the 2007 Kids/Cadet Central Kids Regional wrestling tournament.

The tournament will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 26 and Sunday, May 27 Wrestlers will compete on eight mats set up inside Battelle Hall.

“The Greater Columbus Sports Commission is proud to welcome USA Wrestling to Columbus for this prestigious tournament,” said Linda Shetina Logan, executive director of the Greater Columbus Sports Commission. “With Ohio’s rich wrestling tradition and Columbus’ central location, we strongly feel that our community has the ability to become one of the top host cities for wrestling events in the Midwest.”

The tournament will feature wrestlers ages 5-16 competing in freestyle and Greco-Roman in a variety of age divisions. Participants in the Midget, Novice and Schoolboy/Schoolgirl competitions must reside in USA Wrestling’s Central Region (Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia). The Cadet and Girls’ Festival, Pee-Wee and Bantam events are open to all competitors.

Ohio’s rich wrestling tradition will benefit the quality of this event” said Pete Isais, Director of National Events for USA Wrestling. “The partnership between The Greater Columbus Sports Commission and Ohio USA Wrestling for the Kids/Cadet Central Kids Regional will provide valuable experience. This experience will help The Greater Columbus Sports Commission realize their goal of hosting future marquee USAW wrestling events in the Columbus area.”

Admission is $10 per day or $15 for a two-day passes. Children 12 and under and adults 65 and older are free. For more information, visit www.TheMat.com.

The Greater Columbus Sports Commission was founded in June 2002 to attract professional, amateur, collegiate and youth sporting events to Columbus.
