INTERNATIONAL DIVING INVITATIONAL SET FOR MAY 26-28, 2006 AT OHIO STATE

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Several Olympic, world and national diving champions from China and the United States will be among the competitors when the 1st Annual International Diving Invitational is held May 26-28 at The Ohio State University.

The event, to be held at the new Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion, will draw an estimated 125 elite divers from the China and the United States. The field will include Tian Liang, a two-time Olympic platform champion; Laura Wilkinson, a two-time Olympian, 2000 Olympic Gold Medalist and 2005 World Champion; Troy Dumais, a two-time Olympian and 2005 World Championships silver and bronze medalist; as well as several elite Central Ohio junior divers.

“We are proud to host some of the best divers in the word in Columbus and to get a sneak preview of the diving competition at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games,” said Linda Logan, executive director of the Greater Columbus Sports Commission. “We are also excited to showcase the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion, which will allow our city host more of these types of elite swimming and diving events in the future.”

The International Diving Invitational will feature divers competing in five divisions (Open Men, Open Women, Junior Open boys, Junior Open girls and 13-under) in 1-meter, 3-meter and platform. Competition begins at 9 a.m. from May 26-28. Admission is free to morning sessions. Tickets to the evening sessions, which begin at 6:30 p.m. on May 26 & 27 and at 3 p.m. on May 28, are $10 per session or $25 for all three days. Doors open one hour prior to competition. The Greater Columbus Sports Commission was founded in June 2002 to attract professional, amateur, collegiate and youth sporting events to Columbus.
